Night Train Hanoi – Sapa (SP1/SP3): Complete Guide and Schedule 2026

📅 April 3, 2026 ⏱ 8 min read

The overnight train between Hanoi and Lao Cai is one of the most iconic experiences in northern Vietnam. Leaving the capital in the late evening, falling asleep to the rhythm of the train pushing into the mountains, and waking at dawn in the cool valley air — it is a way of travelling that has something almost romantic about it, very different from a simple transfer.

This guide gives you all the practical information you need to take this train in 2026: schedules, fares, companies, available classes, and tips for choosing the right ticket.

Why take the night train Hanoi – Sapa rather than the bus?

The Hanoi–Lao Cai night train combines several advantages that the limousine bus cannot offer:

  • Sleep on the way: A comfortable berth in a closed compartment means you arrive in Lao Cai rested, ready to start your day in Sapa without losing a day to travel or sacrificing a night at a hotel.
  • Save a night's hotel: The train departs around 21:30–22:00 and arrives around 05:30–06:10. Effectively, you save one night of accommodation in Hanoi.
  • Safer than night roads: The 4D national road can be winding. The train is an extremely safe and reliable means of transport, regardless of the weather.
  • A journey within a journey: Crossing the Red River Delta in the dark is an authentic Vietnamese experience.

How does the Hanoi – Sapa train work?

There is no station in Sapa

This is the most important point: the train does not go to Sapa. The railway line ends at Lao Cai, a border town 38 km below Sapa. From Lao Cai station, it takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour by road (minibus or taxi) to reach Sapa.

Outside the station, shared minibuses (60,000 to 80,000 VND) and taxis (200,000–300,000 VND) wait for passengers to make the climb to the mountain station.

Schedules 2026: SP1 and SP3

The recommended trains for 2026 are as follows:

Train Departs Hanoi Arrives Lao Cai Duration
SP1 21:35 05:30 (D+1) ~8h
SP3 22:00 06:10 (D+1) ~8h10

The return journey (Lao Cai – Hanoi):

Train Departs Lao Cai Arrives Hanoi Duration
SP2 20:55 04:45 (D+1) ~8h
SP4 21:30 05:25 (D+1) ~8h

Available classes: Standard vs Private

Two types of carriages coexist on SP1 and SP3 trains:

  • Standard Sleeper (Vietnam Railways): These offer standard comfort with 4 or 6-berth cabins. This is the most budget-friendly option.
  • Private Tourist Cabins: Several private companies have renovated official wagons to create "rolling hotels" that are much more comfortable and luxurious.

Indicative Prices (one way):

Berth Type Company Price (est.)
4-Berth Sleeper (Standard) Vietnam Railways ~ €22
4-Berth Sleeper (Private) Chapa / Sapaly / King €32 to €45
VIP 2-Berth Cabin (Private) Private companies €75 to €90 / pers.

Recommended Companies

The choice of company will often depend on which train its wagons are attached to:

  • On SP1: Chapa Express (our #1 recommendation for service quality), Fansipan Express.
  • On SP3: Sapaly Express (very comfortable), King Express (excellent value for money).

The Victoria Express Special Case

This is Vietnam's most luxurious train. However, please note that it does not run every day (usually not on Saturdays) and booking is often prioritized for guests of the Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa.

Advice for Choosing Your Ticket

  • Book in advance: During high season (September-October and March-April), private wagons sell out quickly. We recommend booking at least 2 weeks ahead.
  • Choose a private wagon for better sleep: The €15 price difference is well worth it for the peace, cleanliness, and superior quality of the bedding.
  • Consider the return journey: The return to Hanoi (Lao Cai – Hanoi) is also overnight. This is often the time when you appreciate the train's comfort most after several days of hiking.
  • Transfer to the station: Many agencies or hotels in Sapa offer a direct transfer to Lao Cai station about 1.5 hours before departure, allowing you to dine in Sapa before boarding.

Preparing for Departure from Hanoi

  • Arrive 30 to 45 mins early. Hanoi station (Ga Hà Nội) is at 120 Lê Duẩn. Be careful as there are two entrances; the main entrance is for northbound trains.
  • Bring a jacket: Air conditioning in private cars can be very cold.
  • Earplugs: While comfortable, Vietnamese trains remain authentic machines; engine and track noise may bother light sleepers.
