Road to Sapa from Hanoi
Getting to Sapa

Hanoi to Sapa:

"Cross the Tonkin — compare the charm of the train, the speed of the bus, and the freedom of a private car."

Sapa is located 315 km northwest of Hanoi, approximately 5 to 6 hours by the Noi Bai–Lao Cai highway opened in 2014. There is no airport in the area: all travelers arrive in Sapa by land, by train, bus, or private car. Each option has its advantages depending on your budget, comfort, and the time you wish to dedicate to the journey.

With twenty years of experience organizing stays in Sapa, we have tested all these transport options in both directions, across all seasons. Here is our honest appraisal of the field.

There is no universal answer: the best transport depends on your traveler profile. The night train is ideal for those who want to combine travel and rest. The limousine bus is the most convenient for a quick daytime arrival. The private car is the most comfortable and flexible solution, especially for families.

Hanoi–Sapa Night Train: Romantic and Restful

The train remains the most iconic option for reaching Sapa. You board in the evening in Hanoi and wake up in the mountains. Upon arrival at Lao Cai station, a bus shuttle or taxi completes the journey to Sapa in 45 to 60 minutes.

Important: The train does not serve Sapa directly. The Hanoi–Sapa train journey takes about 9h30 total, including 8h by train to Lao Cai, and 1h30 road travel to Sapa.

Hanoi–Sapa Private Car: Comfort and Total Freedom

Private car remains the favorite transport for families with children and groups of friends, thanks to its schedule flexibility and comfort. It is also the only option that allows you to turn the journey into a real stage of your trip.

On National Road 4D after Lao Cai, the scenery becomes spectacular. The O Quy Ho Pass (2,037 m), with its plunging view over Muong Hoa Valley and the Hoang Lien Son range, deserves a twenty-minute stop on its own. By bus or night train, you miss all of this.
