Cafes & Mountain Drinks

Misty mornings, the cold mountain air, and a cup of cà phê trứng — the perfect Sapa ritual.

In Sapa, having a coffee isn't just a daily habit — it's an experience in itself. The mist enveloping the mountains at sunrise, the fresh air descending from Hoàng Liên Sơn, the terraces overlooking the stepped rice fields: the setting transforms every cup into a memorable moment.

Sapa's coffee scene is both diverse and vibrant, ranging from iconic Vietnamese chains and family-run addresses tucked in the villages to "cloud cafes" perched high above the valleys. This guide presents the best cafes, must-try drinks, and all the practical information.

Drinks You Must Try

Cà phê trứng

Egg Coffee

Invented in Hanoi in the 1940s. An egg yolk whipped into a foam with condensed sugar over search espresso, served over a candle. Sweet, creamy — halfway between a dessert and a drink.

🥥

Cà phê cốt dừa

Coconut Coffee

Strong Vietnamese coffee blended with coconut cream over crushed ice. Creamy, lightly sweet, refreshing despite the mountain chill. The signature of Cộng Cà Phê.

💧

Cà phê nhỏ giọt

Drip Coffee

Classic Vietnamese coffee prepared in a small metal filter placed on a cup. Deep, concentrated, served with sweetened condensed milk. The everyday morning coffee in Vietnam.

🌿

Shan Tuyết Tea

Mountain Tea from Sapa

From wild century-old tea trees grown above 1,400m. Woody, floral, lightly smoky notes. Of exceptional rarity and aromatic complexity.

🍎

Rượu táo mèo

Wild Apple Wine

The emblematic Hmong drink. Small wild mountain fruit macerated in rice liquor. Lightly tart, fragrant, with a nice roundness.

Practical Tips

  • 💵 Cash only in most cafes. Even established places often don't accept cards. Bring small bills.
  • 🕔 The Mist closes at 5 PM — the only notable exception. Don't miss it for breakfast or brunch.
  • 🌅 Arrive early for the view. The morning mist gives the terraces a unique atmosphere between 7 AM and 10 AM. After noon, clouds often rise.
  • 🚶‍♂️ Village cafes are worth the detour. Gem Valley and Lá Dao offer a radically different experience — combine them with an excursion to Cat Cat or the Muong Hoa valley.
