At 2,047 meters altitude, O Quy Ho Pass is the highest and longest road pass in Vietnam. It connects Sapa in Lao Cai province to Lai Chau, crossing the Hoang Lien Son range over nearly 50 kilometers of winding roads.
For mountain landscape lovers, this is one of the most spectacular routes in Southeast Asia — and an absolute must-see during a stay in the region. Whether for its breathtaking panoramas, legendary sunsets, or remote villages, O Quy Ho is a total sensory experience.
Most passes in Northern Vietnam offer beautiful views. O Quy Ho offers something more: a succession of microenvironments that change with every kilometer.
Leaving Sapa, you first cross pine and bamboo forests, then zones of low clouds where visibility drops to a few meters, before emerging into 180° panoramas of the valleys and peaks of Hoang Lien Son.
Descending towards Lai Chau, the landscape changes abruptly: tropical vegetation, golden rice terraces, Hmong villages clinging to the mountainsides. The pass is also famous for its flaming sunsets.
Total freedom. Ideal to stop everywhere. Mountain experience required.
Comfort and safety. Perfect for families or in foggy weather.
A legendary challenge for seasoned cyclists. Dizzying descent.
Ridge trails connecting Lai Chau to Sapa in 2-3 days. Guide mandatory.
Be sure to fill up on gas in Sapa before leaving, as there are no gas stations on the pass itself. Also, expect a temperature difference of 5 to 8°C compared to Sapa; a light jacket is rarely too much at the summit!
